Research within the scientific disciplines helps us to explain natural phenomena and expand our knowledge of the world. At the undergraduate level, research can help promote these lofty goals as well as provide students with the experience of developing, executing, and presenting their o research projects. The department promotes development of novel research projects for students as part of the comprehensive undergraduate educational experience. All students are required to take a Research Methods class. Students also have the opportunity to develop one-on-one relationships with faculty and other professionals during their research experiences which can lead to presentation at national, regional, or local scientific meetings and publication in professional journals. Some students obtain this research experience or professional experience during the summer through NSF-REU experiences, summer research programs around the country as well as internships. Others perform research during the academic year and receive credit as independent study courses which expand their knowledge in areas not currently offered in the curriculum.
