Visitors from Bexley and the surrounding community are expected to reconvene on The Capital Green Thursday, July 4, for food, games, music and a brilliant fireworks display from the south-campus soccer field.
Thousands are drawn to Capital University’s campus each year for Bexley’s evening Independence Day festivities, where they celebrate their country and community during the honored Bexley Fourth of July tradition. Capital has partnered with the Bexley Celebrations Association to host the evening festivities since 2008.
This year, Capital has joined the City of Bexley and community partners to bring several other community events to campus, including the Main Event, a free monthly summer movie and music series, and Ohio Chautauqua in Bexley, a weeklong celebration of history, culture and the arts, which will run July 16-20.
July 4 evening festivities will begin at 6 pm on The Capital Green — the lawn located at Main Street near Memorial Gateway. There will be games, art activities, face painting, live music and food from local restaurants and businesses.
Later, the party will move from north to south campus for the fireworks display, which will begin at 10 pm. Fireworks will be launched from the soccer field south of Harry C. Moores Campus Center, near Astor and College avenues.
Setup for the celebration will begin the morning of Wednesday, July 3. Parking lots near the fireworks launch site — by the Campus Center and south of Schaaf Hall — will be closed Wednesday. All Bexley campus buildings will close on Wednesday after evening classes have ended. They will be accessible by key card only.
On Thursday, all campus parking lots will be blocked, but faculty and staff will be able to park in the following lots:
- The Capital Center lot at Mound Street and Pleasant Ridge Avenue
- Huber-Spielman Hall
- Yochum Hall east and west
- Public Safety
If you plan to park in these lots, please notify Public Safety in advance at 236-6666 in case they need to contact you. If you move a barricade while parking, please put it back in place. Please note: Parking will be prohibited and towing enforced at the Campus Center/Cotterman Hall Thursday.
Also on Thursday, Bexley police will close Pleasant Ridge Avenue from Mound Street to Astor Avenue; Astor from Pleasant Ridge to College Avenue; and College from Astor to Mound from 9:30 to 11 pm, and possibly earlier.
Buildings and affected parking lots will remain closed until 7 am Friday, July 5. The fire marshal has requested that no one enter the Campus Center or Schaaf Hall during the fireworks because they are so close to the launch site.
Bexley Celebrations Association still needs volunteers for one- or two-hour shifts. If you’d like to help with the parade starting line, 5K run or with the festivities at Capital, please call Bexley Recreation at 614-559-4300 or email Barb at email@example.com.
